PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Drama: Shetland, BBC1, 9pm

It’s rarely quiet on the subarctic archipelago. DI Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall, left), tells Rachel that a terrible discovery the previous night could actually have nothing to do with the disappearance of her vulnerable son Connor. Meanwhile, Danny is less than happy at the decision to let Pepper Waldron’s family go back home – especially as news filters through that the former police officer has left Shetland in a hurry, with DI Perez soon hot on his trail.

Travel: Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport, ITV, 9pm

Heathrow’s been in the news a lot recently, rarely for the right reasons, but in tonight’s episode of the fly-on-the-wall documentary the Red Arrows aerobatics display team soar over the airport during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Meanwhile, airport passenger experience manager Suki (above) tries to wake a passenger from his slumbers in time for him to catch his flight to Toronto.

Film: Deadpool, 4Seven, 10pm

The superhero genre is turned on its head in this action-comedy that rips up the rulebook. Ryan Reynolds (left) plays a smart-Alec ex-mercenary who is stricken with terminal cancer. In his desperation he foolishly agrees to take part in a dodgy experiment that he hopes will cure him. However, things don’t go to plan and his treatment leaves the once-handsome man terribly disfigured but also with incredible superhuman powers which he plans to utilise to get his revenge on the man who left his body and face brutally scarred. Arguably Reynolds’ defining role, he wisecracks his way through epic stunts and gory battle scenes in Tim Miller’s endearingly goofy X-Men offshoot.

Documentary: HMP Styal: Women Behind Bars, C5, 9pm

A look behind the prison walls at one of Britain’s most controversial jails. HMP Styal (above) houses many of the UK’s most notorious female criminals, some of country’s most detested child killers are locked up for years here. In this documentary, ex-staff members as well as some former inmates, reveal to us what it’s really like inside this cut-off world, exposing the day-to-day life in a prison that’s like no other.

Sport: Cricket: Today At The Test, BBC4, 7pm

Highlights of the best of the action from day one of the First Test in the three-match series between England and South Africa, which is taking place at Lord’s, the Home of Cricket, in London. The last series between these two sides in this format saw England claim a 3-1 victory in South Africa in the 2019/20 season. The Proteas will be looking for revenge against Ben Stokes (right) and co, with two more Tests to follow at Emirates Old Trafford and Kia Oval.
