Having hearing problems? Getting a simple test with an expert is the stress-free solution

-

PEOPLE often wait several years before they seek help for hearing loss, according to Specsavers expert James Thomas. But James explains that tests are simple and stress-free, and today there are many devices with a huge range of technologies to suit all hearing needs. Here he reveals what to expect from a hearing appointment…

There’s nothing to worry about You may feel nervous about hearing tests if you’re unfamiliar with them. But they’re as easy as testing your eyes – and they’re free at Specsavers.

The test is simple but thorough The audiologist will discuss your symptoms, and then assess your ears’ overall health using a small camera to examine your ear canals and ear drums. Next come two hearing tests. One involves playing sounds at various pitches to you through headphones, and you’ll be asked to press a button every time you hear one. This measures your ability to hear sounds transmitted through the air.You then wear a headband that monitors how well your ears detect these soft vibrations.

You might not need hearing aids Sometimes hearing loss is due to blockage, such as ear wax, and the audiologist will recommend our wax removal service.

If you do, we’ll recommend a device ideal for you If the tests show you need hearing aids, the audiologist will talk you through Specsavers’ state-of-the-art digital devices for an aid that matches your lifestyle as well as your prescription. If you enjoy socialising, you can choose hearing aids that reduce background noise – this makes conversation clearer in busy environments like restaurants. Many modern hearing aids are so discreet that people often don’t realise you’re wearing them. Many also have bluetooth, so that you can wirelessly stream conversations from your phone, and even music. The device will be programmed to match your needs.

We’ll keep a check on your hearing After this first appointment, we recommend you should have a hearing test once a year if you’re over 40, and every two years if you’re under 40. That way we can spot changes to your hearing and handle any issues for you in good time. Utilising our online hearing test is a good way to check any changes to your hearing.
