Sterling work, England
PRINCE William roared the Three Lions on last night as England set up a showdown with one of the giants of world football after a 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic.
England had already secured a place in the last 16 of the European Championships after other results went their way on Monday night.
But Gareth Southgate’s side produced an accomplished display to secure victory in the final group game – just days after being booed off the pitch following their
0-0 draw with Scotland.
The Duke of Cambridge, who has been President of the FA for more than 15 years, joined 22,500 fans atWembley last night.
Cheered on by millions of fans at home and in pubs, the Three Lions seized first place in Group D.
This sets up a mouthwatering clash back at Wembley on Tuesday evening with either world champions France, old foes Germany or defending European champs Portugal. Chants of “It’s Coming Home” rang out across Wembley with Raheem Sterling’s opening goal last night. Supporters gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square to watch on screens, while fans were in fine spirits at the 4TheFans Fan Park at Event City in Manchester.
And Manchester City forward Sterling sent millions across the country into raptures as he headed home a delightful Jack Grealish cross from close range. Supporters had gathered with friends and family for the match, watching on TV in pubs, bars and living rooms after months of lockdown misery.
Also cheering on the team at Wembley last night were a group of NHS heroes from North Middlesex Hospital – just 12 miles from the stadium.
But there was misery for Scotland, who lost 3-1 to Croatia at Hampden Park to crash out of the tournament.
