Fly-tipper caught in act at popular beauty spot

- By Tom Hitchenor By Chris Riches

A LOUT was caught on camera dumping bin bags full of hazardous waste close to a country park.

Horrified members of the public tipped off the council after spotting fridges and freezers piling up.

Officers saw Nathan Cossey and another man emptying waste from the back of a van in August 2018.

When confronted, Cossey said he thought he would “try his luck” after seeing others dump at the site near Colwick Country Park, Nottingham.

The 32-year-old of Aspley,

Nottingham, admitted fly-tipping when he appeared before magistrates.

At the city’s crown court he was handed an eight-month suspended sentence, community work and ordered to pay £5,000 for the specialist removal of the waste.

David Mellen, leader of Nottingham council, called flytipping “a blight on any community” but this pile had asbestos, with possible “serious consequences”.

A GRAVELY ill cystic fibrosis sufferer bravely smiled yesterday and thanked the Daily Express after he finally won a lifesaving wonder drug.

Darren Waite, 41, who has struggled to breathe since November with crippling infections, said: “This has given me hope for a future, one I thought was impossible just days ago.” We highlighted Darren’s plight after his doctors had tried in vain to get him US firm Vertex’s new pill Trikafta. Now he and wife Jane, 42, who cares for him at home, are thrilled after Vertex confirmed it had approved Darren for the as yet unlicensed wonder drug.

Darren, who needs an oxygen supply 24 hours a day, held up a hand-written sign thanking Vertex, the Daily Express and all our loyal readers yesterday.

And he said: “Trikafta will hopefully be life-changing not just for me but for many other CFers.

“Jane is the reason why I get up and fight every day. I couldn’t bear for us to be parted – our lives have been inVertex’s hands.

“As a CF sufferer I have always known we have a shorter life expectancy than average. But up until last year I had defied the odds, by keeping super fit exercising for three hours a day.

“Receiving Trikafta will hopefully give me back that life, or a chance to live a normal life which most of us take for granted.”

Infections have hit Darren, of Burnham, Bucks, so hard that just 10 per cent of his lungs work.

Devoted Jane, who first fell for him at playschool when they were both just three, told us: “I cried with relief at the news. There are not enough words to express our gratitude for being given this drug and a second chance. But we want to thank from the bottom of our hearts all those who supported our cause.

“The Daily Express and its readers have campaigned on our behalf on social media and we know this all helped.”

Jane, who gets help around the house with cooking and cleaning from 23-year-old son Bradley, added: “Darren was never a sta
