pain syndrome, which causes discomfort around the outside of your hip and outer thigh area. It’s usually a deep pain, which may be aching or burning, and is often worse when you lie on the affected side. Exercise can be hard too and many affected people walk with a limp.

It used to be thought that this type of pain was caused by inflammation of the sack of fluid that protects a part of the thigh bone that sticks out sideways near the hip, a condition known as bursitis.

However, it’s now known that this type of pain can also be caused by minor tears or damage to the muscles or tendons around the hip joint.

It often gets better without any treatment, but this can take a month or more.Taking paracetamol or ibuprofen can usually ease the discomfort and you should avoid activities that make the pain worse, such as excessive walking.

Physiotherapy can be very effective, but some find it difficult to do the stretching exercises involved due to pain. If this is the case, then a steroid injection into the affected area can be very helpful. Normally investigations aren’t required, but if pain persists, an MRI may be useful in diagnosing the underlying cause.
