Eubanks eyeing pot of gold at end of rainbow

- By Chris McKenna

CHRIS EUBANK JNR called out WBA supermiddleweight champion Callum Smith and big rival Billy Joe Saunders after outscoring James DeGale.

But within moments his father, the former twoweight world champion, cast doubt on those fights ever happening.

Eubank Snr had taken more of a back seat in the build up to Saturday’s super- middleweight clash but he was quick to wrestle back control after his son’s victory in a scrappy fight with the former IBF champion.

He would prefer to see his son remain on ITV, with their pay- per- view platform and exclusive deal with the American Premier Boxing Champions franchise, because – ever modest – he feels his son is a gold mine.

“The contract Jnr is under is with PBC is the best in the world,” said Eubank Snr. “We will invite great champions. As far as I understand, pay- per- view is the big deal right now. If it is, then they have a gold mine. ITV have a gold mine. Chris Eubank Jnr is the star of it.”

Smith is aligned to Matchroom, who have a deal with Sky, while Saunders is tied up with Frank Warren and BT Sport. Even without the politics, Eubank Snr may guide his son back down to middleweight.

Eubank Jnr finally delivered in a big fight . He dropped DeGale twice and won a unanimous decision for the lightly- regarded IBO belt at the O2 Arena.

Their styles clashed but Eubank Jnr was always trying to force the action against the awkward southpaw.
