Man dies in second plunge horror

- By Cyril Dixon

A CITY worker leapt to his death at London’s Canary Wharf yesterday seconds after sending a text message from his mobile phone.

Witnesses said the smartlydressed man put down his bag then used the device before plunging from the fourth floor of a shopping centre.

His death came less than 24 hours after a 32-year-old man died after falling from escalators at the financial district’s underground station.

Both tragedies unfolded in front of hundreds of workers and shoppers at the east London business enclave.

A restaurant manager told how he saw the latest man die just before 9am.

Another witness, who works at the Halifax bank, said: “I heard a ping and then a thud so I ran out and looked over the side.

“There was a body lying on the floor. He had fallen straight past me. I couldn’t look any more, I had to look away.”

Jordan Bruin, the 25-year-old manager of a nearby clothes shop, described hearing “the loudest bang and a lot of screaming”.

He added: “I ran out of the shop and there was a guy lying on the floor, he had fallen from the top floor.

“The noise was unlike anything I had ever heard before – I thought it must have been a gun shot – then I heard screaming.

“Police arrived and put up a cordon, and now there’s investigators gathering around the man, who is under a white sheet.”

Canary Wharf resident Justin Fynes, 36, said: “The body appeared to be of a man, dressed professionally like a City worker. There was a bag and phone nearby.”

Police have yet to name the man who died in Monday’s incident at Canary Wharf Tube station.

Scotland Yard said the man killed in yesterday’s incident was aged in his 50s and was pronounced dead shortly after 9am.

A spokesman added: “His next of kin have not yet been informed – inquiries continue.”

In January 2014, JP Morgan executive Gabriel Magee killed himself by jumping from the roof of the bank’s European headquarters in Canary Wharf.
