THE LIFE AND TIMES OF GERAINT 1:

Geraint was asked at school what he wanted to do in life. “Win the Tour de France and score a winning try against England,” was the reply. Over to you, Warren Gatland

2:

At Whitchurch High School he was two years ahead of Wales captain Sam Warburton and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale. Can any school in Britain match this?

3: 4:

His first nickname the Penguin was coined by British colleague David Millar. “He was like the Penguins from the Madagascar film – soft and cuddly on the outside, hard as nails on the inside.”

5: 6:

He married Sara Elen Thomas in 2015. Welsh-born Sara was a physiology student at Liverpool when she met Geraint at a Cardiff nightclub in 2011.

7: 8:

Sara asked cycling fan Jeff Banks to design outfits for Geraint and his 10 groomsmen at their wedding. She still takes charge of his wardrobe off the bike.

9: 10:

As well as winning the Tour, Geraint has won two Olympic gold medals and three World Championships in the team pursuit and helped break five world records. There were 26 major climbs. Twelve in the Alps, 10 in the Pyrenees and four in the Massif Central. Geraint Thomas burned up 9,000 calories on a big mountain day, enough to feed four working men in civvie street. Hydration on the road is vital and Team Sky riders used up 1,680 bottles of water during the three-week Tour. Sky’s Egan Bernal, right, was the youngest rider on the Tour at 21 and Franco Pellizotti the oldest at 40. The highest point of the Tour was the 2,215-metre Col du Portet at the end of Stage 17. The organisers (ASO) pre-booked rooms in 502 hotels for teams and Tour workers as it travelled around France.
