Carrey cleared over suicide of ex-love ‘blackmailing him’
HOLLYWOOD star Jim Carrey has been cleared over involvement in the suicide of his ex-girlfriend after it was discovered she forged medical papers in an attempt to show he gave her a sexually transmitted disease, it emerged yesterday.
Carrey, 56, had been in a bitter legal battle after Cathriona White’s estranged husband and mother sued him following her 2015 death at age 30 after a drug overdose.
They claimed the Truman Show film star was responsible by providing drugs used by Cathriona.
Notes found at the home of the Irish make-up artist revealed she was upset when her on-off relationship with Carrey ended. In one note on her iPad, discovered two years after her death, she blamed the A-list star for exposing her to a life of sex and drugs and scorned him for allegedly giving her herpes.
Cathriona’s autopsy showed she died from a fatal overdose of prescription pills.
After her funeral her estranged husband Mark Burton and mother Brigid Sweetman filed a suit for violation of the Drug Dealer Liability Act and wrongful death.
They accused Carrey of providing the drugs and obtaining them illegally under a false name.
Carrey denied the claims and filed a countersuit against the pair, insisting the lawsuits were an attempt to exploit him. He also said Cathriona had blackmailed him, threatening to go public with claims he gave her a sexual disease unless he paid millions of dollars.
In legal documents, his lawyer said Carrey “succumbed to the demands and privately resolved the issue with Cat and her lawyer”, even though the claims were false.
Cathriona’s STD test results were recently found to be forged.
Yesterday Carrey’s spokesman confirmed the lawsuit had been dismissed in California.
He said: “Jim is looking forward to moving on with his life now.”
