Hollywood’s stars make it a dark night at Globes in sex pest protest

- By Sarah Westcott

THE red carpet turned dark at the Golden Globes awards last night as stars wore black in protest against sexual harassment in the film industry.

Some of Hollywood’s biggest names had pledged to forgo their dazzling designer gowns and dress in black in a highprofile display of solidarity with victims of abuse.

Actress Susan Sarandon was among the first to step out in a chic off-the-shoulder tuxedo outfit for a charity event ahead of last night’s ceremony.

British actor Gary Oldman and his wife Gisele Schmidt also set the tone, with both choosing dark outfits for a pre-awards bash in Los Angeles. Nominees including Allison Janney and Timothee Chalamet were among dozens of stars who said they would wear black in support of the “MeToo” movement.

The slogan spread around the world on social media last October as allegations emerged against the disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein and actor Kevin Spacey.

The 75th Golden Globes is the first major event in the film world’s awards season since the scandal broke last October.

Allegations against actors, filmmakers and Hollywood agents have led to many of the accused being forced out or dropped from creative projects.

Spacey was later fired and his character written out of hit TV show House Of Cards.

Once-major players have been shunned or snubbed in this year’s nominations.

Chalamet, who is up for best performance in a drama for Call Me By Your Name, said black outfits send “a very powerful message for a cause that’s very important”.

And actress Evan Rachel Wood urged guests to “make a circle” around predators to identify them to others.
