After a battering from Barbara, a new storm looms

- By Nathan Rao

JUST when you thought it was safe to venture out, a second ferocious Christmas storm is set to sweep across Britain.

Storm Conor will lash the country tomorrow, unleashing 90mph gales, torrential downpours and snow over high ground.

People heading out over the weekend are warned to expect delays on roads, railways and ferries lasting into Boxing Day.

Gusts could even top 100mph in exposed parts with rain and melting snow likely to cause flooding.

Plunging temperatures over the coming days will bring snow in remote northern areas with almost four inches forecast over high ground.

The Met Office last night confirmed Conor – the third named storm of the season – will strike tomorrow.

It has issued severe weather warnings for damaging gales across northern and central parts through the day.

Turbulent weather will rage through Monday with a separate amber warning for 90mph winds Scotland.

Storm Barbara swept across northern Britain yesterday, unleashing gales and heavy rain.

Gusts reaching almost 120mph were recorded on the summit of Cairn Gorm in the Scottish Highlands, at 11am yesterday, while gusts of 68mph were recorded in Stornoway in Lewis and 75mph at Mona on Anglesey in Wales on Friday afternoon. in place

In the Highlands more than 100 schools were closed due to the bad weather.

Met Office forecaster Oli Claydon said: “The remnants of Barbara will move through northern regions on Christmas Eve, bringing more very strong winds and frequent showers which could be heavy with the risk of hail, snow and thunder.

“Christmas Day will turn unsettled as Conor arrives. The storm will last into Boxing Day which will see the main thrust of across Scotland.

“Gusts of 90mph are possible in the North on Boxing Day and colder air will see temperatures drop, bringing the risk of wintry showers.

“We expect things to turn more settled as high pressure moves in after Boxing Day.”

The Met Office said temperatures will hit 57.2F (14C) widely tomorrow morning before dropping to single figures overnight.

Boxing Day will be cooler with highs of just 44.6F in the North and 48F in the South and overnight lows close to freezing.

Met Office chief forecaster Dan Suri said: “A further spell of very strong winds associated with storm Conor is expected through Christmas Day and much of Boxing Day.

“Impacts, primarily across northern Scotland, may include disruption to power supplies and large waves affecting coastal areas, while heavy rain in the West Highlands combined with snow melt may lead to rising river levels.” the winds
