Doyle is delighted by City signings

SKY BLUES LEGEND GIVES HIS VERDICT ON TRANSFER BUSINESS

- > TOM LEACH

COVENTRY City hero Michael Doyle has given his verdict on Mark Robins’ summer signings – and he was very impressed with what he saw again Rangers.

The former Sky Blues skipper, who started his career in Scotland, was watching from home as City took on Steven Gerrard’s side with three of Robins’ new permanent arrivals playing their part.

Robins has, of course, landed five new permanent recruits, not including loan signing Ryan Giles, in total but only Callum O’hare, Gustavo Hamer and Marcel Hilssner were in action at Ibrox with Hamer one of the stars of the show.

But what did Doyle, who has just signed a new deal at Notts County, make of their performances? Callum O’hare

“Callum O’hare was a big impact player last season and he often had a big impact coming off the bench,” he said.

“He is certainly a player for the future and he is on who is really going to develop into a top young player.

“Long term, he will be a good bit of transfer business for Coventry City.”

Gustavo Hamer

“Gustavo, the lad in midfield, he was very impressive,” said Doyle, who once marshalled that very position for the Sky Blues himself.

“He had a great range of passing and he looked as if he really dictated the game.

“Along with O’hare, the two look like very good bits of business,” he added.

Marcel Hilssner

“I wouldn’t say he played badly but he was quiet,” said Doyle.

“He has come all the way from Germany and these lads take some time to settle.

“It can be hard to hit the ground running and it’ll take a little bit of time to get used to the English game, especially this season when it will be Saturday and Tuesday all year long.

“I mean no offence to the foreign lads, but they’re just not used to it. They will be playing in Coventry on Saturday and then in Preston on Tuesday, it’s just so unique,” he said.

On City’s Championship chances

“It is going to be a big step up but Coventry are on a real high.

“They’ll go into the division wanting to make a bit of a statement,” Doyle said.
