A BRAVE neighbour tried to rescue an elderly woman from a fire at her bungalow in Nuneaton.

Firefighters who attended the severe blaze at the property in Devon Close on March 31 revealed the Good Samaritan had tried to get into the home but the heat from the flames was too fierce.

They had also raised the alarm with the emergency services.

Police officers, firefighters and ambulance crews descended on the street as cops urged people to stay away from the area.

Fire investigation specialists are now carrying out an iinvestigation into the cause of the fire, which broke out in the front room of the bungalow. A spokesman for Nuneaton Fire Station said: “The fire was reported by a neighbour who opened the door to try and get inside but he was beaten back by the heat.”

Firefighters wore breathing apparatus as they tried to rescue the woman and another person inside.

Sadly there was nothing that could be done to save the woman. The second person, who has not been identified, managed to escape.

twest Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) sent an ambulance and a paramedic officer to the scene.

A spokesman said: “We were called by the fire service to reports of a house fire in Devon Close, Nuneaton at 2.23pm yesterday.

“An ambulance and paramedic officer were sent to the scene. On arrival crews found one patient, a woman.

“Unfortunately nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed deceased on scene.

“A second patient was treated for the effects of smoke inhalation and discharged at the scene.”
