Take Me out contestant: “Dave said ‘no likey’ but now we’re so in love”
As the ninth series of Take Me Out returns, Closer speaks to Adele and Dave Cobain, who were the first couple from the show to get married
hen Adele W Vellacott, 36, appeared on Take Me Out in 2011 after seven years of being single, she only did it for a giggle.
So the fitness instructor was surprised to fall head over heels for contestant Dave Cobain, 32.
But true love didn’t run smoothly for the couple as they were paired with different people for their date on the TV show’s infamous Isle of Fernando’s.
But, a few months later, at the show’s reunion party, they hit it off and now the couple are happier than ever.
A KNOCKBACK
They married in August 2014 – the first couple from the show to do so – and their son Freddie, now three, was a page boy.
Speaking exclusively to Closer, Adele, from Bristol, says: “My friends convinced me to go on Take Me Out and I only agreed for a laugh. I was a bit gutted when Dave turned off my light! But we’re so happy together now and hoping to add to our family. I’m so glad I went on the show.”
Dave adds: “I kept Adele’s light on as I thought she was attractive, but turned it off after finding her answer to one of my questions boring – but now I’m so glad we got together as we’re the perfect match.”
Adele had been single for seven years when she applied for the hit ITV show. She recalls: “All my friends were settling down and I felt like a spare part. I thought it’d give me a confidence boost, but I didn’t think I’d meet someone.
“I was attracted to Dave straight away – he seemed like a cheeky chappy. I kept my light on for him right up until the end, but then he picked another girl. I was pretty disappointed.”
Later in the show, Adele was paired up with a contestant named Michael and the couple ended up on the Isle of Fernando’s along with sales manager Dave, and his date, Lucy.
Adele says: “Michael was nice, but there was nothing romantic between us. There was a bit of a spark with Dave, but we didn’t spend much time together as we were busy on our dates. And, as he’d turned off my light, I didn’t think he’d be interested.”
HAPPY EVER AFTER
A few months later, Dave and Adele got to know each other better at a reunion show.
Adele says: “He was fun and chatty and he made me laugh. Six months later, we started dating. My friends and family were so pleased I’d found love.”
Their romance blossomed and Adele fell pregnant with their son in October 2012.
She says: “We were thrilled and Dave cried when I told him. He lived nearby, but moved in shortly afterwards. When I was four months’ pregnant, Dave proposed on holiday in Lanzarote – it was so romantic.”
Freddie was born in June 2013 and, a year later, the couple tied the knot at a hotel in Wales.
She says: “We invited some contestants from the show to the reception. My brother made a joke about Dave turning off my light during his speech and said it was the last time he’d ever say no to me.”
Now the couple hope to have another baby and are looking forward to the new series of Take Me Out. Adele adds: “We’re still huge fans – it reminds us how lucky we were to find each other.
“When Freddie is older, we’ll show him the clips of his mum and dad on TV. We tell all our single friends to apply for the show – we’re proof it can have a happy ending.”
