Austin Mini

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

Give it a little gas to assist a cold start and you’re immediately aware of intake modifications under the bonnet. The oil pressure gauge shows just over 60psi cold, nearer 50psi as temperature builds. The new clutch is a typical Mini on-off switch that takes a couple of attempts to master, but gear selection is smooth and precise. The car is transformed offchoke where the aftermarket air filter set-up works perfectly and the 850cc unit buzzes along enthusiastically. The suspension is firm but not harsh, which, combined with servo-assisted brakes, bring out the best in this Mini’s chassis.

BODYWORK CHECK

Images from the full and comprehensive restoration completed in 2011 confirm a massive investment in the bodywork, including a replacement rear subframe. New wheelarch panels have been installed, along with a new floor, boot and front wings. The panel gaps are exact and the inner and outer sills – painted in the same SEAT Amarillo Ouni Yellow outer finish – really make this Mini stand out, though the contrasting black roof helps to calm the overall effect. Waxoyl injection is still evident and the underside presents as well as the top, while the chrome is also excellent. The nearside front wheel has minor kerb damage, but that should be easily fixed. Tyres are recently fitted Falkens.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The interior has new carpets and door cards, with black seats piped yellow. The new roof lining is taut and the dashboard features period temperature, speedometer and oil pressure gauges, plus an additional Smiths rev counter. The dash card is slightly misshapen, but a ten-minute refit should correct that. Some may find the interior additions a little overwhelming, but they are easily replaced and don’t detract from an overall impression of excellence.

UNDER THE BONNET

The original 998cc engine has been replaced by an 848cc engine that’s been rebuilt with an unleaded cylinder head, larger SU carburettor, watercooled inlet manifold and three-branch exhaust. The bay area is well detailed with plenty of bling, including an attractive alloy rocker cover. The boot area has also received attention with new twin fuel tanks and trimmed flooring to hide the spare wheel. The restoration images finish in 2011 and cover the previous two-year period, with MoT data confirming that 4000 miles have been covered since. There are plenty of old invoices and receipts.

THE CCW VIEW

Plenty of time and money has been lavished on this Mini, though with the work done to one individual’s taste, and it performs like a 1000. Purists may raise an eyebrow, but it delivers pocket-sized fun.
