Landlord’s CCTV captures ghostly figure leaving pub

WITH Halloween just around the corner, people can be forgiven for feeling a little spooky at this time of year and thinking that they may have seen or heard something that isn’t really there.

But for one pub landlord in Carmarthen, he managed to catch an image of a ‘ghost’ on CCTV.

The incident happened at Cwrw, a craft beer pub on King Street in the town centre.

The pub’s owner, Michael Hilton, has a screen in the office which shows CCTV footage captured above the entrance to the pub. That’s when he spotted something.

“At first I just thought it was a glitch so I looked at it again and again and just thought it was a bit weird,” said

Michael. “I thought I would show it to a few people just to see what they thought and they couldn’t believe it.

“I don’t believe in ghosts but I could definitely see a figure walking out of the door and turning right. Because the office is upstairs, I was checking the CCTV and you can see two people leave to start with, and then I saw the shape of a man leave and I was like ‘what the hell is that?’”

The footage appears to show a ‘seethrough’ figure exiting the building. To make it more intriguing, Michael said nobody else was leaving the bar at that time, only the couple seen earlier in the footage. There was no other man in the bar who could have left and appeared in the CCTV footage.

The pub is in a historic Grade-ii listed building at the St Peter’s Church end of King Street, which has been occupied by Michael and his Cwrw business since 2019.

In previous years it has been a popular music venue, a nightspot, and has had different incarnations as pubs over the years. According to

I’ve shown the clip to a few people and they’ve all had the same reaction - oh my god, what is that?!

British Listed Buildings, it was built at least as early as the 18th Century.

“I’ve shown the clip to a few people and they’ve all had the same reaction – oh my god, what is that?!” said Michael. “Then the stories start about the building’s past and how people who worked here before used to hear creaks and strange noises in different parts of the pub. One man sent me a message to say that they used to hold rituals in one of the back rooms here years ago, and that would explain the ‘ghost’.

“The more you watch it the more it catches you, but as I said I don’t believe in all that myself so I don’t know what it is.”
