Wanderers clinch 2nd XI Premier division title

-

CARMARTHEN Wanderers clinched the South Wales Cricket League Premier 2nd XI West title with a comprehensive 200-run win against an inexperienced Ynysygerwn side.

The Wanderers elected to bat and scored an impressive 287-7 from their 50 overs. Notable contributions were made by Andrew Harley (38), Carl Holding (43), skipper Ian Taylor (48), Mark Wilson (37) and young Harry Connick (35).

After tea Ynysygerwn were put under early pressure as Andrew Edwards claimed three early wickets for 32 runs.

The league’s leading wicket-taker, Steff Jones, again turned on the style, with his slow bowling bagging 4-17, which demolished the visitors’ middle order.

Youngster Alfie Connick 2-16 put the Wanderers on the brink of victory, which was sealed by veteran Kevin Jones taking the final wicket in the 32nd over, much to the delight of the home crowd as the visitors fell to 78 all out.

Delighted captain Ian Taylor was presented with the trophy by an SWPL official. He said: “I am so pleased for the whole squad as we have used 26 players during the summer, including many junior players.

“It’s been a terrific effort against some quality experienced sides. We were not fancied to be in the title race, but we turned over one of the favourites, Swansea, way back in early May and it just snowballed from there.

“There has been a great atmosphere within the side and we have played some very good cricket in a tough league.”
