FISHER’S JOY AS LLANELLI UPSET QUINS
LLANELLI upset the form book again to beat West Walian rivals Carmarthen Quins.
After Jac Wilson’s early penalty for the Quins, flanker Joel James scored Llanelli’s opening try on 25 minutes which Jonny Lewis converted.
Replacement-scrum half Liam Davies touched down on 37 minutes to hand the Quins an 8-7 lead at halftime.
The Quins scored again three minutes after the restart through lock Shaun Jones, breaking tackles on a marauding 40-metre charge.
Wilson converted and then added a penalty on 55 minutes to make it 18-7.
However, No. 8 Nathan Hart set up a grandstand finale with a breakout from the tail of a Quins lineout for an unconverted try on 70 minutes.
The rejuvenated visitors sealed success in an enthralling derby encounter through a Joe Roberts try on 77 minutes and Ashley Sutton showed great composure to nail the conversion.
The victory saw Llanelli back up their shock win over Newport last Sunday.
Llanelli head coach Paul Fisher was delighted after his side had turned over the hot favourites on their own ground.
“It’s been a tough start to the season but credit to the boys,” said Fisher.
“They stuck to what we spoke about in terms of their effort and commitment and kept playing right to the end.
“Ellis Thomas was outstanding, as he has been in all other games this season, with the try from Nathan Hart the key moment in the game.
“From that we grew in our belief to keep the ball and holding our shape.
“Our aim is to continue improving as a team, remembering you only get out what you put in.”
Quins head coach Emyr Phillips admitted: “Llanelli wanted it more than us, which is the most frustrating thing for me.
“It was a tough performance to take.” CARMARTHEN QUINS – Tries: L Davies, S Jones. Con: J Wilson. Pens: J Wilson (2). LLANELLI – Tries: J James, N Hart, J Roberts. Cons: J Lewis, A Sutton.
