CROWS ARE FLYING HIGH AFTER BANK HOLIDAY DOUBLE BONANZA

ROYSTON Town joint-manager Chris Watters says that his side exceeded expectations over the bank holiday weekend.

After a difficult start to the campaign, where the Crows conceded seven goals in their opening two matches, the Garden Walk outfit have now made it three wins in a row in Southern League Premier Central after their victories over Coalville Town and Hitchin Town at the weekend.

On Saturday, at home, an early goal from Cain Keller before a late strike from Tsagium Guimdo Florian secured a valuable 2-0 success over Coalville.

The Crows followed that up with a short trip to Hitchin Town, and despite the hosts taking the lead, Royston hit back with goals from

Matthew Bateman and Florian ensuring the points headed back to Garden Walk.

“I would have been happy with four (points), that was the target (for the weekend). So to come away with six is great,” Watters told the club’s website.

“Ten (points) from 18 that is a good return, I think, especially considering the difficulties we had at the start.

“I still don’t that we are anywhere near what we will be. Once we get them all up and running I think that we will become a really good football side to be honest.”

Watters was also pleased with the support that his players received at Hitchin and hopes that can be replicate back home.

“I thought Saturday it was quiet at times, I thought that we were in a library,” he said.

“Hearing the guys (the supporters) today, probably emphasises how important that it is to help the lads when it isn’t going right.

“That addition of support, maybe when I am barking at them a little bit, I think helped sucked the ball in at the end to be fair.”

On the performance at Hitchin, Watters added: “I think they made it really difficult for us first-half, I don’t think we started well, I thought we were again reacting to situations and scenarios, I thought that the backline kept the scoreline down.

“The goal was poor to concede. We have spoken about getting in people’s faces, but to allow one wing-back to cross it and allow another one to nick it at the back post shouldn’t happen.

“But fair play to the boys for reacting, we had an edge on them setpiece wise. It proved a point to get back into the game, we tweaked a few things second half, tired legs and what not, I thought we were probably comfortable second half.

“I felt that we dealt with their threat. I guess where they stepped on a little bit allowed us to exploit the space in behind.”

On Saturday, Royston turn their attention to the FA Cup when they host Isthmian League Premier side Cheshunt in the first qualifying round and it is a game that Watters is relishing.

“There is a bit of romance there, it is where I started my journey in nonleague football, I have got an affliction for the club any way,” the jointmanager said.

“I would imagine that Craig (Edwards, Cheshunt manager) would be saying the same, they would have rather a lower team in that first round, we are dealt the hand that we are given.

“It will be a good game of football, two evenly matched teams.”
