STUNNING CLIMAX TO BRIDGE 150 CELEBRATIONS

-

A SPECTACULAR laser and fireworks show climaxed a week of celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of an historic North Wales railway bridge.

The 700-yard Barmouth Bridge is the longest viaduct in Wales and carries the Cambrian Coast line from Machynlleth to Pwllheli across the River Mawddach.

The firework show was enjoyed by a huge crowd who caused traffic gridlock in the town for a time on Saturday evening.

Locals were quick to voice their appreciation of the show on social media.

Steve Richardson wrote on the Barmouth Bridge Facebook page: “Great show. Well done to all involved.”

Debs Parkin said: “Fantastic amazing wow. Enjoyed it immensely thank you Barmouth.”

And Susan Brownrigg added: “Brilliant display. Loved it.”

Network Rail joined the local community to celebrate the anniversary with events across Barmouth during the weekend.

Andy Thomas, route managing director for Network Rail in Wales said the organisation are currently working on innovative plans to improve the Grade II listed structure.

He said: “Barmouth viaduct is one of the most iconic structures in the whole of Wales, connecting people for 150 years and boosting economic growth by bringing tourists to the area.

“We are working closely with Cadw and Gwynedd Council on our plans to refurbish the viaduct to secure its long-term future, so that it can continue to play a crucial role for the local economy for many years to come.”

At Barmouth leisure centre there was an exhibition of model railways, including a scale model of Barmouth viaduct.
