BRISTOL ROVERS PLAYER RATINGS

-

JOE DAY - 7

Had next to nothing to do until the dying moments. Had to pick the ball out of the net before making a crucial intervention to deny Matthew Pennington an equaliser. He took a kick in the process and had to be replaced deep into stoppage-time.

GEORGE WILLIAMS - 8

Moved inside to the right of the back three and was comfortable from start to finish as Rovers suffocated Shrewsbury.

ALFIE KILGOUR - 8

Won his physical battles and gave Shrewsbury nothing to feed on.

CIAN HARRIES - 8

Safe in and out of possession. A performance deserving of a clean sheet.

LUKE LEAHY - 8

Right place at the right time to open the scoring. Made a difference in both boxes. JOSH GRANT - 8

Set the table for this performance by winning the 50-50s in midfield. Excellent in and out of possession.

ZAIN WESTBROOKE (pictured) - 8

Had his manager roaring in the technical area after taking a knock to the face but still winning a crunching tackle. Played in a more attacking role than previously and was much more influential. Showed brilliant vision to spot a reverse pass for Brandon Hanlan, and equally good execution to weight it perfectly for the striker to run through and score.

LUKE MCCORMICK - 8

He and Grant were the central to Rovers’ ability to sustain attacks. They pushed high up the pitch, won the second balls and used possession well.

ALEX RODMAN - 8

Sported a bandage after an early head injury, excellent movement and his delivery created the opening goal. Looked at home at wing-back and was a constant threat in attack.

SAM NICHOLSON - 8

Played through the pain of a hip injury which needs surgery. Struggled on Tuesday but was improved here. Had a hand in the first goal and looked much more nimble than in recent weeks. Unlucky with two shots that narrowly missed the target with the goalkeeper beaten.

BRANDON HANLAN - 8

Had a difficult first half with his finishing and first touch awry, but he made up for that in the second half with a superb finish to give the Gas a deserved two-goal lead.

SUBSTITUTES

JONAH AYUNGA (for Hanlan, 78 mins) - n/a

AI KOIKI (for Nicholson, 88 mins) - n/a ED UPSON (for Rodman, 88 mins) - n/a JACK BLADWIN (for Westbrooke, 88 mins) - n/a

JORDI VAN STAPPERSHOEF (for Day, 90+7) - 9

Made a vital save in bizarre circumstances. Day was forced off with a head injury, and the Dutchman rose from the bench to make a last-gasp save to secure the win.

NOT USED: James Daly, Cameron Hargreaves.

SHREWSBURY: Matija Sarkic, Matthew Pennington, Ethan Ebanks-Landell, Ro-Shaun Williams, Nathanael Ogbeta, Ollie Norburn, Sean Goss (David Edwards, 74 mins), Josh Vela (Davis, 87 mins), Shaun Whalley, Curtis Main (Rekeil Pyke, 87 mins), Harry Chapman (Daniel Udoh, 67 mins).

NOT USED: Harry Burgoyne, Scott Golbourne, Ryan Sears.

DAN BENTLEY - 9

Grabbed an easy Lowe header early on before a string of top saves to deny Hourihane, Lowe, Dhanda and every other Swansea player bar Guehi, Woodman and Roberts in the first half. Close to reaching Ayew’s penalty but a strong performance all afternoon.

TOMAS KALAS - 9

Told by Pearson early on to keep talking to Towler and also explained to the youngster why he was subbed off before the break. Brilliant at intercepting the ball and leading the Robins throughout. Heroic performance at the back.

ADRIAN MARIAPPA - 7

Recovered from a poor touch to just stop Ayew getting in on goal before vitally clearing off the line to preserve the clean sheet at the break. His experience shone as he kept talking to those around him.

ZAK VYNER - 9

A rare mistake early on as he tried to shepherd the ball off the pitch but Lowe nipped in to keep it alive. But good clearing header on 30 minutes to stop a Roberts cross causing mayhem. His interception high up the pitch led to a charge into the area and a composed cross to set up the equaliser.

JACK HUNT - 7

Solid shift down the right as he stopped Bidwell stealing in at the back post to open the scoring in the first half. Though his crossing wasn’t as accurate as he may have liked, he did his defensive duties diligently and kept the home side out as City roared back in the second half.

ADAM NAGY - 7

All-action display as he nipped in to win loose balls and carried up the pitch in the first half. Helped to keep the ball moving in the second half.

TYREEQ BAKINSON - 6

Lost the ball a little easily at times and a heavy pitch may not have helped his first touch as the ball was fizzed into him.

KASEY PALMER - 8

Great sliding tackle on Latibeaudiere in the first 15 minutes and may have been a little unlucky as Stroud harshly penalised him for handball in the box. Scored directly from the corner to atone for the earlier mistake.

RYLEY TOWLER - 6

Roberts got behind him in the first few minutes and then collected a yellow card for catching Roberts late. Was taken off after catching Ayew in the first half and with Pearson worried that he might collect a yellow card.

FAMARA DIEDHIOU - 6

Good battle with Cabango and Guehi that threatened to spill over after one aerial challenge in the second half. Pearson advised him to spin into the channels more at one point in the second period. A battling display as he won the most aerial duels (10) in the game.

NAHKI WELLS - 8

Dropped back into midfield to keep the ball well at times and came up with the equaliser on 65 minutes as his crisp finish from Vyner’s cross was fired into the net. SUBSTITUTIONS

ANTOINE SEMENYO (for Palmer, 89 mins) - n/a

Finally grabbed his first league goal as he made the most of Woodman’s poor clearance.

HAN-NOAH MASSENGO (for Nagy, 90 mins) - n/a

Helped to see out the game in stoppagetime.

STEVEN SESSEGNON (for Towler, 45 mins) - 7

Had a good second half as he stopped Lowe getting in on goal with one sliding tackle, and provided plenty of energy. NOT USED: Max O’Leary, Taylor Moore, Ben Pearson, Sam Bell, Alex Scott, Tommy Conway.

SWANSEA: Freddie Woodman, Joel Latibeaudiere (Morgan Whittaker, 83 mins), Ben Cabango, Marc Guehi, Connor Roberts, Matt Grimes, Conor Hourihane (Paul Arriola, 81 mins), Jake Bidwell, Yan Dhanda (Jay Fulton, 78 mins), Andre Ayew, Jamal Lowe.

NOT USED: Ryan Manning, Korey Smith, Ben Hamer, Kyle Naughton, Brandon Cooper, Oli Cooper.
