Gareth Jones watches Cesar fold to give Gwynne an early victory
WELSH lightweight champion Gavin Gwynne rebounded from his loss to countryman Joe Cordina with a facile one-round victory over former Olympian Abdon Cesar.
The Stockton-based Cameroon fighter was caught behind the ear by a none-toovenomous right from Gwynne and, to gasps of surprise, fell forwards to the canvas. On rising, he showed no desire to continue and triallist official Chris Jones waved it off after 1-55 of the scheduled eight-rounder.
It was not the quickest finish. Impressive Bridgend super-lightweight Robbie Vernon battered late sub Michael Mooney (Worcester) in a corner until Mr Jones jumped between them after just 55 seconds.
Another six-threes was the fight of the night, but really should not have been. Unbeaten Risca youngster Jake Tinklin stepped up in class against Hungarian super-light king
Zoltan Szabo and decided to stand toe-totoe with a man who boasts a dozen knockouts.
The local survived several solid shots, but it was only in the last, when he finally obeyed manager Chris Sanigar’s screamed pleas to use his jab, that he clinched a 58-57 vote from referee Martin Williams.
Port Talbot’s Geraint Goodridge took a 59-56 decision over Islington’s Jordan
Grannum, Reece Carter scoring for Mr Jones. Bristolian Dan Sarkozi crossed the bridge to drop Torquay trier Adam Bannister in the first and third and win 40-34 (Mr Williams for Mr Jones). Elsewhere, Ystrad teenager Jordan Withers floored Southwark-italian Victor Edagha late on for a 40-35 triumph from Mr Carter, who returned a 40-36 whitewash for Port Talbot’s talented Joshua John against Ricky Leach, from Kent. Mr Williams matched that tally for Cardiffian Lloyd
Germain over Midlander MJ Hall.
