Black Country Bugle

A New Life Down Under

- by Albert Hinton

Now when I came to Australia I was one of Maggie’s jest She took my work from me And sent me on a quest

Not one to quake at challenges I stood tall, and for me at best I filled my application, Yes I took the test

Having played an instrument And been in a band It was a natural step And on my feet I’d land

I met some blokes, Through sport I think In fact I can’t remember It may have been in August Or even late September

We formed a garage band, And in it as I recall We used to sing in harmony, And reverb off the wall

It didn’t take long really As songs began to fall We called ourselves Heatwave Yes I’m sorry that’s all

But it wasn’t too long We expanded And the band it grew To Renegade the Showband We were ready, and we knew

Now we played the rodeo circuit Playing old and new Rowan on guitar, Me on mandolin, Ian on bass too

Now we had problems with the drums As bands are wont to do We had many fill-ins, what a blast Oh what’s a band to do?

Now as always happens With bands it came to pass Our lead guitarist got a better gig In Ireland oh what a hassle! Now the band it continued For a reputation had been found We carried on much longer With the original and better sound

Now we were a four piece As we still gigged around But we were still maintaining Our favourite country sound

Now Renegade the Showband Started to peter out They wanted something different You could hear them shout

Now the band’s nearly finished It’s coming to an end Till we come up with something different It seems to be the trend ...
