Mcdonald’s staff have tried to make a dent in Bath’s litter problem by joining a clean up in the city. A group of 18 volunteers from the Southgate and Weston Lock Retail Park Mcdonald’s restaurants in Bath came together with rangers from the Bath BID to clean up their local area. Mcdonald’s offered readers of our website Bath Live the opportunity to vote for an area they’d like cleaned up, with the bus station coming out on top with 58 per cent of the vote. The group of volunteers embarked on the challenge to give the area a much-needed refresh, collecting several bags of litter. This event was just one of a number of Mcdonald’s clean-ups that take place across the UK as part of its anti-littering campaign, ‘Love Where You Live.’ The campaign continues to encourage local communities to take action and work together to tackle litter in their area, and forms part of a 12-year partnership between Mcdonald’s and Keep Britain Tidy. Mcdonald’s franchisee Paul Pearson, who owns and operates the Southgate and Weston Lock Retail Park restaurants in Bath, said: “I’m really proud that staff from my restaurants came together and volunteered their time for the clean-up. “It’s great to get readers involved in choosing which area is cleaned, to ensure our efforts make a real difference to people living in the local community. “It’s a key priority of ours to ensure that our local area remains free of litter and an enjoyable place to live, work and visit. “As a business we understand the important role that we play in making the area a better place.” Allison Herbert, chief executive of the Bath BID, said: “We’re really pleased to have collaborated with Mcdonald’s on this project. “The BID is committed to reducing litter in Bath and the company’s ranger team is out and about every day of the week, keeping the city clean and tidy. “We are pleased that local companies are keen to get involved and spread the word about the need to stop littering and love where you live.” Alongside large community litter events like these, Mcdonald’s says every restaurant carries out at least three litter patrols a day to collect all litter that has been discarded, regardless of its origin. However there have still been issues with litter near Mcdonald’s in Bath in recent months, so locals may be happy to hear the company has taken specific action to combat the problem. Mcdonald’s employees across the UK cover a total of 3,000 miles each week on litter patrols, according to the firm, which equates to 150,000 miles a year and the distance of five marathons each year per store.
