Four star Bro

- Bro Goronwy’s Andy Williams goes for an overhead kick against St Asaph

BRO Goronwy began their defence of the NWCFA Junior Cup with a comfortable 4-1 home win over St Asaph City Youth.

With the tie never in doubt from the local weather conditions, Bro eased past their opponents as they looked to replicate last season’s triumph in this prestigious competition.

Midfield maestro Andy Swindells controlled the pace of the game, knowing when to put a foot on the ball and the right time to speed things up and apply a killer pass.

Strength in depth at the back gave Goronwy keeper Jonny SweetserHawkes a quiet afternoon.

Always in control of the tie, it was to no-one’s surprise that the Gwynedd League side raced into a two-goal lead before the break.

Connor Jones let fly with a free kick from 25 yards and, with the help of a defensive deflection, the ball looped into the back of the net with only eight minutes on the clock.

Following a corner, Taylor Jones picked out Andy Williams, who headed in from two yards out for 2-0.

Taylor and Connor Jones both went close before Carwyn Williams and Connor Jones were denied by the keeper.

Sam Regan produced an acrobatic attempt inside the box that looked to be on target before striking a defender.

Bro captain Dylan Jones fluffed his lines from only six yards out early on after the break, but was reprieved as it became 3-0 on the hour mark.

Regan’s floated free kick was met by Andy Williams flick header into the path of the marauding Connor Jones, this time his shot too powerful for the keeper to stop.

A bit of Swindells’ magic feet so nearly produced a fourth goal, the midfield general waltzing his way past numerous defenders.

But he was unable to cap off his fine run, blazing over the crossbar.

Andy Williams’ jinking run in and out of defenders ended in the ball somehow smacking both posts but still staying out and Taylor Jones’ effort also skimmed off the upright.

The visitors gained a consolation goal with 10 minutes remaining, Sam Roberts applying a composed finish into the bottom corner of the net.

But the Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League travellers could not produce any more threats on goal that may have led to an exciting finish to the cup tie.

Carwyn Williams gained a deserved goal with only minutes remaining to give the hosts a convincing 4-1 victory.

Sam Roberts’ slide ball perfectly picked out Williams’ run, the attacker firstly denied once more from the glovesman only to be on his toes to force home the rebound.
