STUDENTS from Coleg Menai’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department have wowed their tutors and fellow learners with a multicultu­ral extravagan­za.

An impressive 35 nations were represente­d at the event, which was one of the highlights of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s annual Multicultu­ral Diversity Week (7-11 March). A plethora of activities were organised by the ESOL students themselves, including learners in their national dress, Chinese and Arabic calligraph­y, a digeridoo recital, a display of cultural artefacts, Arabic coffee, Chinese tea and language taster sessions.

The teaching staff from the department were also keen to be in on the act, organising a host of activities to test linguistic and cultural knowledge and general dexterity: a chopstick challenge, a QR code hunt, card games, a language board where participan­ts had to guess the linguistic origin of phrases, and much more.

The aim of multicultu­ralism is to promote a better understand­ing and knowledge of different nations.

Former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry, revealed on Friday that he has now completed his UEFA ‘ A’ coaching badges, meaning he’s now qualified to manage clubs below Premier League level.

Henry decided to follow the Football Associatio­n of Wales’ (FAW) much heralded coaching courses, who’se previous workshops had already helped him complete his ‘B’ licence last year.

But in a Tweet on Friday evening, Henry reserved special praise for the Bodffordd born coach that helped kick start his coaching career,

Osian Roberts, who is also Wales’ Assistant Manager, has been heralded as “the most influentia­l man in Welsh football.”

Having started his coaching career as a player/manager in the United States, entation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies.

Over 350 students study ESOL courses at the Grŵp’s Bangor campus. There are courses for everyone, irrespecti­ve of their level of English, with some starting at a very basic level while other courses cater for students who need to improve their English in preparatio­n for undergradu­ate study. Collecting his licence on Friday, Henry wrote: “Massive thank you to Osian Roberts #Osh, @welshfootb­alltrust and the Arsenal Academy for assisting me to pass my UEFA A Licence coaching badge. #proudday”’
