Driver, 93 dies after holiday site crash
A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that a 93- year- old woman died in hospital a few days after she was involved in a road traffic collision at a holiday park in Ayr.
“Emergency services were called to Crofthead Caravan Park on Tuesday, July 2, after a car collided with a JCB.
“A man aged 82 and a woman aged 93 were taken to Ayr Hospital to be treated for their injuries.
“The 93- year- old woman died in hospital on Friday, July 5.”
Gordon was on the scene shortly after the incident.
He said: “This is a really terrible accident and our hearts go out to the family of the victim and indeed her brother, who was a passenger in the car when the collision took place.
“My understanding is they set off to head back to their Glasgow home from Crofthead and the elderly female driver’s foot slipped.
“Instead of hitting the brake she unfortunately stepped on the accelerator and smashed into the side of a parked tractor on the caravan park.
“She was later taken to hospital in Ayr and released but our understanding is she later died in Glasgow.
“The family have been popular park residents for around five or six years and are well liked and respected. We know they cherished their time down here in Ayrshire.
“The safety of the residents is paramount on our holiday park and there are speed limits and driving restrictions in place but this appears to be just one of these unfortunate accidents that couldn’t be prevented.
“We wish the family all the best at this difficult time.”
