A thug was jailed for assaulting and throwing a glass tumbler at a man during a pub brawl.

Gordon Kerr appeared in the dock in front of Sheriff Mhari Mactaggart at Ayr Sheriff Court last week after admitting to assaulting the customer at Troon’s Lonsdale Bar on August 2.

The court heard how the 24-year-old, of Station Drive, Irvine, had been drinking to excess when the incident took place and also attempted to assault a police officer whilst being held at Ayr Police Office.

Depute Fiscal, Lindzi Baynes, explained: “The accused had entered and was seen by witnesses at the Lonsdale public house in Troon and he had been drinking. The accused began conversations with the witnesses within, including the complainer. Due to how intoxicated the accused was, staff became concerned. He then held a glass and began to be aggressive, shouting ‘shut the f**k up – I will do you all in’.

“A short period of time later, the accused left the locus and then re-entered. He held a glass tumbler and threw it towards the complainer.

“Police were contacted and he was traced at a nearby takeaway. His conduct continued and he attempted to strike a police officer with his head.”

Kerr’s defence solicitor, James Irvine, told the court that he came up to Scotland to attend his step-father’s funeral.

Sheriff Mactaggart said: “This is a situation where there is no other way of dealing with this other than a custodial sentence,
