Does sock make history?
I could be wrong on this one – and Millbrae’s media maharishi, Ron Evans, will no doubt put me right if I am – but did Finn Russell’s sock make history on Sunday?
No – I don’t mean his boot . . . I mean his actual SOCK! If you don’t follow rugby tradition – let me explain.
The Barbarians – a sort of invitational “rest of the world” team – play in black and white striped shirts. But the players can wear any sock they like – and traditionally it’s their club sock.
Former Ayr fly- half Finn Russell played for the Baa- Baa’s on Sunday against England with the pink and black of Ayr Rugby Club on one leg – and the colours of his Academy club Falkirk on the other.
It’s a first for the Alloway club as far as I know! And a great tribute from the man who helped Ayr RFC to a league a cup double a few years ago.
So what will happen to the sock now? I reckon it should be added to the selection of international shirts already on display in the club house.
What a talking point – and what an honour.
And judging by his performance – with a try, seven conversions and a great chip to set up another try – there will be a lot more socks to come! Well done Finn!
PS Can I have the sock you didn’t wear for my wee pub? My regulars are always telling me to put a sock in it!
