Union bosses this week slammed claims by a councillor that staff morale has never been higher.

It comes after independent Alec Clark, who sits on the administration, said “morale of our staff has never been higher”.

“This is an exciting budget which represents an investment in our communities,” he added.

Responding to Tory jibes over the consultation process, the SNP’s Peter Henderson added: “We’re seeing rank hypocrisy and crocodile tears.

“The unions and staff are pleased with how things have been done.

“It is the those opposite ( Conservatives) ably assisted by the local press who have put the fear of God into them.” But GMB union chief, Paul Arkison, said: “Our members have been worried sick about their futures.

“To say that the trades unions are happy is completely wrong.

“How can we be happy with something that we have not seen?

“If there is a specific trade union happy with this budget then the council should say who it is, as it is not GMB Scotland.”

Mr Arkison also blasted the council’s consultation process.

He added: “This whole exercise by South Ayrshire Council has been so demoralising for our members, and for us not to have even seen the budget is wholly unacceptable.”
