Train pups with Maya
When you collect your puppy and are ready to bring him to his new home it can be very exciting, especially if there are children involved but it can also be an overwhelming time for the puppy.
Remember you are taking this small creature away from all he has ever known, the safety and warmth familiarity of his mother and littermates and hopefully the familiarity of people who have been getting him used to being handled kindly by humans.
If you have been able to visit your puppy once or maybe even several times before taking him away, he will have become familiar with your scent and your voice and will be happy to see you.
If this is the case though, please remember the puppy is now about to leave his dog family and travel with you to a completely new environment so in order for him to feel safe and to minimise stress it is a good idea to bring with you what will be his own puppy towel and gently rub his mother and littermates scent on it before wrapping the puppy in it.
This will help keep him calm during the strange and perhaps frightening journey to his new home.
Or better yet, if the breeder is willing, they may oblige by giving you one ( or part of ) a blanket the puppy family have been using.
If you are using a travel crate you can place him gently inside along with his towel or blanket and spend a little time reassuring the puppy before starting the engine and once again before driving off.
It is also a good idea to take along some water, a bowl, puppy wipes, and bags incase he gets a little travel sick.
Once home, give your new puppy time to get used to all the new sights, sounds and smells.
If there are other animals or children in the home introduce them gently to him and one at a time. If you flood his puppy senses with too much at once he may become fearful and stressed.
Please remember the experiences the puppy has now will shape his future behaviour so keep things relaxed, positive and fun; with a gentle start the puppy will quickly gain in confidence, be eager to learn.
