Academy into business
Prestwick Academy has been developing the young workforce and doing its bit to tackle youth unemployment.
With support from the Prince’s Trust and DYW funding, Prestwick Academy has set up two micro businesses.
One of these is the Stiletto Gals, who have been running since the start of term, offering their services to both staff and pupils. Pupils involved have set up the business and through this will achieve a Personal Development Award.
In addition, the English department have developed relevant National 5 Literacy work. Cheryl Smith from Ayrshire College has been delivering the industry recognised units- Creative Nail Finishes to Hand and Foot4 and Nail Art5.
Pupils also have the opportunity to go on three week long work placements throughout the session. This package provides an opportunity for pupils to gain invaluable experience about the word of work as well as developing entrepreneurial skills, whilst gaining relevant qualifications.
It’s having a positive impact on the youngsters, as Danielle Lynch said: “The nail bar is amazing, and has helped my confidence”
Shannon Roberts added: “It’s a good opportunity to learn new skills”
And Cara McNi c o l felt : “I’ve increased my confidence, communication skills and am learning to work as part of a team.”
The Stiletto Gals have helped out at the carers day and the Christmas activities day and are looking for other opportunities outwith the school to develop their skills. They will soon be formally open for business.
Anyone who is aware of an event where the Stiletto Gals could help, or think they could offer some business mentoring, should contact Ms A Hall at Prestwick Academy 01292477121.
