Roads members get to first foot Pinwherry HQ

- Arnie Thomson

Ayr Roads/ Harry Fairbairn Cycling Club’s first club run of 2017, attracted over 30 members, when it visited the County HQ at Pinwherry on Sunday.

In a damp but warm morning, the run took in the Girvan, Assel and Stinchar Valleys before descending on the club hut.

A welcome of hot soup and goodies, courtesy of Gwyneth Rixon and Aileen Fisher, was enjoyed, with a toast to Roads by chairman, Alex McAllister. The return to Ayr, was by Byne Hill, Girvan and the coast road, a distance of 60 miles.

Meanwhile, the season long, evening 10 Mile Time Trial League was won by Duncan McArthur with Alastair McGibbon second.

Duncan competed week on week, in all kinds of conditions and amassed most points. During the season, he gained two PBs, beating the magic 25 mile per hour for the distance.

During the season, Duncan clocked 7,000 miles, his best for 30 years, including seven solo rides of over 100 miles and three of over 120.

His biggest one day mileage was 214, when he took in a one day ride from Ayr to Beattock, before turning homewards via Dumfries, Kirkcudbright and Creetown. Not only has Duncan carried on an Ayr Roads tradition of long distance cycling and joins a growing number of men o’ miles within the club, but has put these to good use.

Next year he hopes to achieve another PB and hints at some track work at the Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The weekend also saw the club compete in two Cyclo Cross events, with Ollie Kelly taking ninth in the Cyclo Cross at Pollock. Beth Macrae was 14th in the ladies race, with Catherine Logan of Fullarton Wheelers, first Ayrshire lady and third in her age category.

Janet Erskine, who would normally have been riding the event, chose to compete in the British National CX Championships in Yorkshire, along with Fraser Tait.

On Monday, the first Evening Turbo Training session commenced at Prestwick Sailing Club. All welcome to join at 6.45pm.
