Bands will rock up a storm at new festival

- Michael Reynolds

Troon will become a haven for hard rock fans this winter after the line- up for a brand new festival was revealed.

WinterStorm – organised by the team behind the highly succesful South Beach Sessions – will take over the town on November 25 and 26 with a super slate of rock acts.

Ricky Warwick – on tour at the moment with Thin Lizzy – headlines the Saturday night with his band The Fighting Hearts, while FM headline on Friday.

Organiser Ian McCaig said: “We’ve been putting on small high quality gigs in Troon over the past couple of years but have always been looking at whether we could do something bigger and just a little heavier!

“The weekend in November before St Andrew’s Day opened up and after taking to some of the band management and agents we’ve pulled together what we think is a really strong and varied mix of rock bands.”

The line- up was revealed last week and has already seen a great response from rock fans around the country, with WinterStorm looking set to get off to a flying start.

“There’s a different back story for different rock fans of different ages, but the feedback we are getting is really strong.

“The older heavy rockers, like me, remember Praying Mantis and Tygers of Pan Tang playing The Piv in the eighties, while for others the melodic rock of FM – who recently supported Heart on their UK Tour - and newer AOR bands such as Vega and Toseland are the attraction, but over the two days we will have a great selection of rock music on that stage.”

Glasgow rock radio icon Tom Russell has already signed up to compere the event, while an acoustic Unplugged By The Beach event is being set up within the Concert Hall.

Up and coming Scottish rock bands such as Bloodlines, The King Lot and MasonHill will also appear on the line- up alongside top names from around the UK.

Organisers hope to attract rock fans to Troon for the weekend, and have put together special packages to entice them to spend the weekend on the Ayrshire coast.

Ian said: “The event was aimed not only at locals but also the longer term aim of attracting “music tourists” to the area - we’ve sold almost half the hotel inclusive packages already to rockers from as far away as south Wales, south east England and even Germany.”
