Village terrorist jailed

Nursery Bake Off Menace who scared Patna

- Stephen Houston

A Patna man who sparked terror in his own village will be behind bars until 2021.

The earliest possible release date for shavenheaded Sean McGregor was revealed in court on Thursday.

And it also emerged in court that he serves his time in segregation away from the general population.

He was sentenced to a year in prison for his threatening behaviour which sparked fear in Patna.

But with the Scottish Government withdrawing his licence on an earlier sentence, last week’s outcome became a housekeeping exercise.

We have already told how the 33- year- old threatened to burn down a house, rape a terrified woman, and lurked outside one victim’s house with a replica hand gun.

Two years ago he went on the run while visiting his gran in Patna on compassionate grounds, sparking a huge police manhunt with warnings he may be dangerous.

At the time he was serving four years for assault and robbery.

A jury had convicted McGregor of terrorising villagers in Patna in July.

Victim Deborah Graham told the court she was at home in Doonbank Crescent at 5pm on July 1 when she saw McGregor coming to her door.

He picked up a redhandled bow saw and called on her partner John McHendry – who was in a bedroom at the house – to come out and face him, before issuing a chilling threat.

Ms Graham said: “I was getting threatened and he said he was going to rape and slash me.”

And she said the incident left her, ‘ scared to be in the house myself.’

McHendry came out the house and McGregor left, They’re a big hearted bunch at Ayr’s Wallacetown Nursery.

And the children relished the chance to show their baking skills in aid of a good cause.

A fantastic £ 302.36 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Research after the nursery held their very own Bake Off.

Everything from tasty banana loaves to lip smacking sponge cakes were sold off to hungry parents.

The charity’s local fundraising manager Katie Mathie popped in to collect the cheque. but came back later the same night at midnight, this time with two other men in a black car.

The car revved its engine outside the house, prompting Ms Graham to look out her window.

She told the court: “He was waving his hand about and there was something in his hand.

“It was shiny because I could see the reflection of the light on it.

“It appeared to me to be a gun.”

McGregor continued to deny it was him when he appeared for sentencing last week.

His agent said: “He maintains he is innocent of this offence.

“He has been in and out of custody for years and the only shining light in his life is his partner.

“He is now at an age where he realised he cannot continue like this.”

The lawyer said McGregor was housed in a single cell and is segregated in prison.

Sheriff Desmond Leslie acknowledged the case could have been held under summary and not solemn procedure with the deletions which had been made to the charge.

But he said: “This was a nasty offence which was extremely concerning and caused alarm, distress and fear.”
