Club hosts carpet bowls weekend

-

Lochgilphead Bowling Club welcomed some new faces to the clubhouse recently with a two-day block of casual games of carpet bowls.

The club hailed the fresh community interest in the winter version of the lawn game after the event.

Lochgilphead BC’s Rose MacVicar said: ‘We had a great couple of days in the clubhouse and it was fantastic to see new folk of mixed ages, trying their hand at carpet bowls.

‘There were some really good skills shown by the novice players.

‘It can be a tricky game to play but it was amazing to see how quickly everyone got to grips with the finer points. We hope everyone had fun.

‘For anyone wishing to have a game in future, carpet bowls are played on a Tuesday and Thursday night at 7pm. Thanks to all who came to have a go and for all who helped to make the event run smoothly.’ bring back. Lee Buckley, coach and secretary at Mid Argyll RFC, said: ‘Four of our senior players have been going to play for Mull and that’s a great benefit to our senior team when we have games.

‘The boys are bringing back that game experience to our own set-up.

‘The group trained last weekend after Mull’s game was called off, which was great to see.’

Lee and the club are looking to increase the senior men’s numbers at training with a view to arranging more regular games. He added: ‘The past two Mondays we have had 14 and 17 seniors at training.

‘We hope to keep these numbers up and if we can get everyone turning up on a given night, we will have around 25 players to choose from, which would really boost training even more.

‘We have a range of ages from 15, 16 up to players in their 40s.

‘There is a range of experience levels too from guys who have never played rugby to others who are coming back to it after a few years, and those who are regular players.

‘With that in mind, we have adopted a back-to-basics approach at training, reinforcing the fundamental skills while getting players’ fitness up.

‘We train on a Monday evening from 7pm-8pm on the astro at the Joint Campus and everyone is welcome regardless of experience level.’

Inveraray kept their slim promotion hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Glenurquhart in their 3pm throw-up at Blairbeg.

The goal that separated the sides came from the penalty spot on 25 minutes. Campbell Watt nipped in front of his marker Finlay Robertson whose rash challenge inside the ‘D’ prompted referee Graeme Irvine to point to the spot. Fraser Watt made no mistake from the penalty spot.

The game completes Glenurquhart’s season and whilst Inveraray still have two games to go, they would need to win both by significant scorelines to overtake Beauly into second place.

Both Inveraray fixtures will play a major role in the title race as Ruaraidh Graham’s side travel to second placed Beauly on Saturday before welcoming league leaders Skye Camanachd the week after. weekend for the mini rugby players in Fort William, and the girls’ under-14 side playing at a rugby festival in Cambuslang.

Three of Mid Argyll’s under-16 boys will travel to be part of the Oban squad.
