Key support helps Ryan secure new career path

- IAN BUNTING

A Coatbridge man who struggled with mental health issues is heading down a new career path thanks to key support from two organisations.

After successfully completing an events management course at college, Ryan Corr started work with a local hotel as a housekeeper, but felt his mental health beginning to dip.

He left his job and found himself out of employment for more than a year before pursuing a career in security.

The 25-year-old completed his SIA training and was proactively contacting employers about vacancies.

Ryan said: “I spoke with David Stewart at Cordant Security, and we discussed my experience.

“He recommended that I joined Remploy as he could tell that I needed a bit more additional support before moving back into a full-time working environment.

“When I signed up to the Fair Start Scotland programme, I met regularly with my key worker, Alanna, who I felt really took the time to get to know my situation.”

Remploy assessed Ryan’s barriers and devised a set of objectives to help him overcome them and become “job ready”.

Ryan explained: “My confidence continued to increase, and I knew that with my SIA badge, and already having a positive conversation with Cordant Security, that

I would have a decent chance of securing work there.”

Remploy organised an interview for Ryan with Cordant as a security officer, and he was thrilled to be offered the job just a few days later.

Ryan was also delighted to hear that he would be receiving in-work support from Remploy to ensure that he could sustain in his new role.

He said: “I was told about the support I would get once I moved into work, and it made me feel a whole lot less anxious about moving into a new job.

“I stayed in frequent contact with Remploy during my first year in employment, and though I have moved sites a few times whilst working for Cordant, I am now based locally and quite frankly couldn’t imagine a better working situation.”

David Stewart, operations manager at Cordant, added: “Ryan approached me over a year ago looking to get back into work, and after chatting with him it became apparent that he would benefit from Remploy’s support.

“Looking back, it seems like it did him the world of good and having worked with Ryan over the last year it is clear that he has benefited from Remploy support.

“He is highly thought of by my client, a very good employee with great customer service skills.”
