Positive inspection for refurbished hospice

Healthcare regulator

- Judith Tonner

St Andrew’s Hospice has received a glowing report from its regulator – following an unannounced inspection just two weeks after moving back into its newly-renovated home.

It was rated “exceptional” for patient and service user experience and “good” for both safe delivery of care, and for leadership of improvement and change, by Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS).

Hospice officials this week received the regulator’s report, following the two-day visit in April which saw the Airdrie hospice become the first to be inspected under a new quality framework.

Chief executive Bruce High said: “The excellent quality of care described has been achieved through hard work and dedication of all our staff, who put our patients and their loved ones at the centre of everything they do.

“I’m especially delighted with the feedback received from HIS as our inspection took place only two weeks after the new hospice opened.

“This has been an exciting and challenging period in our history – we now have a beautiful new hospice, which gives us an excellent platform from which to develop the future reach, variety and quality of our service provision to respond to the ever-changing needs of the Lanarkshire people that we’re privileged to serve.”

Inspectors assessed all aspects of the hospice, also including environment, participation and governance.

Patients and staff moved back into the hospice’s Henderson Street home five months ago after more than a year in temporary premises at Wester Moffat hospital while the £9 million refurbishment was carried out.

It now has 21 state-of-the-art single rooms and three shared rooms, all en suite and with direct patient access to the gardens.
