Tough derby day loss for W/D
Waysiders ............ 13 Cumbernauld ....... 22 Waysiders/Drumpellier came up just short in a battling North Lanarkshire derby against Cumbernauld.
W/D welcomed their rivals to Langloan looking to prevent them from completing the league double in freezing conditions.
Despite the frosty temperatures the park was in good shape which allowed both teams to play some good rugby.
Cumbernauld started the game slowly and gave away a host of penalties , giving W/D the chance to take an early 3-0 lead.
The visitors then came back into the game and went over for the first try following a break and offload from hooker Andy Logan.
Jordan Reid released Ross Laird on the wing. Laird still had a lot to do but powered over two W/D defenders for a try in the corner.
However, W/D were clinical with their kicking and knocked over another penalty to take a slim lead into the half-time break .
Cumbernauld looked brighter in the second half and got off to the perfect start after JJ McNair fielded a direct kick off from Reid – and two phases later winger Davies scored in the corner.
W/D looked to respond and 10 minutes later capitalised on some sustained pressure as the grabbed a try and conversion.
Cumbernauld continued to up their tempo with the forwards proving dominant at both set pieces and in open play.
Following some powerful drives, scrum-half Reid drove over the line from short distance to hand the away team the lead.
Davies then rounded off the scoring with his second after running a great line to score under the posts 13-22.
The Langloan outfit worked the ball well as they hoped to claim the bonus point and worked the ball down to the Cumbernauld five metre line – forcing their rivals to commit a penalty.
W/D were eager to get the ball but an alleged stamp on the head to scrum-half Reid saw a yellow card being shown to the home player and the penalty decision was reversed.
Cumbernauld controlled the ball and saw out the game for a 13-22 victory.
