Hannaways appeal refusal over homes

-

Carnbroe land owners have lodged an appeal against the refusal of planning permission for their proposal to locate houses on an industrial site and neighbouring area of greenbelt.

Applicants J&P Hannaway have submitted documents to the Scottish Government reporter asking for a review of North Lanarkshire Council’s decision to turn down their application to create a residential development at Sykeside Road.

Members of Nor th Lanarkshire’s planning subcommittee were advised of the appeal submission at their recent meeting. The appeal will be allocated to a reporter and its determination will include a site inspection.

The Advertiser told in June how brothers John and Peter Hannaway – whose family have operated a skip hire and waste recycling plant at the site for four decades – were making the residential use application for their land after “reluctantly [deciding] that the time has come to relocate operations” because of increased surrounding residential development and plans to build a nearby joint campus for three existing primary schools.

It attracted more than 2000 petition signatures backing the plan and 139 letters of support; while there were also 162 objections submitted to the local authority.

The proposal had been recommended for refusal by planners, saying it would mean “the expansion of south Airdrie, resulting in a significant effect on the character of the area and loss of a section of environ contributing to the wider greenbelt function; a number of objections from neighbours relating to the loss of greenbelt are sustained”.

A statement from J& P Hannaway following that refusal said: “This is not the end of the road; an appeal will be lodged as soon as the formal refusal notice is received.”
