City transformed into sea of tartan

- Patrick Rolink

There can be no doubt that the sight of thousands of Scots in full marching mode has historically been one of the most frightening images to confront an enemy.

And the likes of Edward Longshanks was indeed sent homeward to think again by determined Scots marauding in their kilts.

On Sunday, thousands took to the streets, turned out in tartan and determined to fight with all their hearts for the cause they had chosen to support by tackling the Kiltwalk.

Unlike the days of William Wallace, those marching were not confined to men in kilts. No, there were women, some pushing prams like battle carts, and children singing and dancing in the unseasonal spring sunshine.

And don’t worry, we the people of Airdrie and Coatbridge were well represented in the ranks.

Walkers from the West End Bar and others supporting Spirit Aid strode with vigour and passion determined to make a difference for charities close to their hearts.

A score and more of former pupils from St Margaret’s High School marched in unison in support of Spirit Aid. And they were joined by many other Scottish warriors fighting fatigue and, would you believe it, sun stroke in order to win the purse for their nominated charity.

There was, however, no battle cry to be heard, rather there was fun, laughter, music from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers and tremendous camaraderie and support as these brave tartan- clad stalwarts not only talked the talk but walked the walk.

Don’t fret if you missed out on this spectacle; I have no doubt that the thousands who took part in this year’s Kiltwalk event will already be in training for next year.

And there is no reason why you can’t get your outfit ready in preparation to join this Tartan Army fighting to help those less fortunate and make a difference.

As for me? Well, I was there at the starting line to see everyone off and offer words of encouragement, and was also at the finishing line to tell them “well done”.

However, as for the walking itself, as I explained on Sunday morning, I had a prior appointment with a carvery!
