Why did we lose postcode lottery?

-

Dear Editor Government statistics for North Lanarkshire and Thrashbush don’t make for easy reading.

With low employment and poor housing, our situation doesn’t bode well.

For me stats are only part of a much bigger story. Yes, we are living in a deprived area with things that are hard to change but our environment, that place we call home, is something we can influence, stand up for and fight for.

Our wellbeing doesn’t only depend on opportunities, health and interactions with family and friends. It also depends on the environment we live in.

Should we just accept streets lined with dog dirt and litter because there are a lack of bins to dispose of waste?

Should we just accept the fact that our roads and pavements are not fit for purpose, with potholes and flooding running down our streets? Should we accept sandbags propped up to stop this flooding?

Should we put up with roads and pavements that make access for disabled and children a danger?

Our play park, and I use the term loosely, has concrete slabs under climbing frames. Do you call this safe? Cone on, North Lanarkshire Council, something needs to be done to fix this.

It seems Thrashbush has faced a bit of a postcode lottery when it comes to funds available, particularly when compared with neighbouring schemes. This doesn’t mean we should have to accept what seems to be a lack of investment in the regeneration of our area.

I know that there are people like me living in Thrashbush who are prepared to work to make the place we call home better. It’s time our voices are heard. Edward O’Brien, via email
