ORGANISERS have promised new attractions, easier access and all the traditional family fun at Bank Holiday Monday’s everpopular annual Great Harwood Show.

The event - which will be returning for a 152nd outing - regularly attracts crowds in excess of 10,000 people and features activities, classes and shows from 8.30am through to early evening.

The main arena will feature Preston Agility Dogs, Joseph’s Amazing Racing Pigs, SMJ Falconry Birds of Prey, Accrington Pipe Band, Northwest Bloodhounds, children’s games, displays of young cattle and vintage vehicles, and the tug of war final.

For the children there will be a baking competition, craft making, donkey rides, a fairground, Punch & Judy, inflatables, handson animals, welly throwing, and sack and egg & spoon races. The baking contest will be judged on presentation, not taste.

Carol Armer, of the Great Harwood Agricultural Society said it is a ‘massive event’ in the local calendar.

She said: “It is a full day out and there is non-stop

entertainment in the main arena all day. It’s just a really good day out for everybody.

“We have got a tent where they have got crafts and entertainment for the children. There are puppet shows and Punch & Judy and a live singer as well which is a new feature. We have got a treasure hunt and children’s games.”

Carol said the event gets bigger every year.

She said: “We have so many heavy horses entered that we have got riding classes for the heavy horses.

“We are expecting quite a lot of shire horses and the other heavy ones.”

Carol added that they are hoping flow on and off the New Showground site, on Harwood Lane, will be better than last year, where fine weather led to some bottlenecks right at the end of the day.

She said: “We have had two extra roads put in that makes it better access for the public to walk, and also for the traders.

“People don’t have to walk over the grass as much.

“The access was fine last year but when they were leaving because it was so nice, everybody stayed more or less to the end so they were all trying to get off at once. We have Kays traffic management and with the help of them it will be a lot easier to get on and off this year.”

Tickets cost £10 for adults, £5 children, £8 concessions, with family tickets and advance discounted tickets available from 01254 886643.
