Sean’s ready for bigger challenge

ACCRINGTON Stanley winger Sean McConville has urged his side to try and put their heartbreak against Middlesbrough behind them and instead focus on Saturday’s league game against Notts County.

The Reds were knocked out of the FA Cup at the fourth round stage last weekend after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to their Premier League opponents at the Riverside Stadium.

Stewart Downing got the only goal of the match on 69 minutes, but McConville had a good chance to level things up during the closing stages.

He couldn’t take the opportunity, and while that left him disappointed, he insists it is now time to forget about it and focus on website. To come up against a quality team like Middlesbrough who have some top players, means the defeat is not too hard to take as we played well.

“We made chances and maybe should have taken one or two. Their goal is great and we can’t do anything about it.

“For my chance, it has come at me a bit quick and I have just reacted with a little header and it’s just gone past the post.

“With hindsight I might have been better having a touch but in the moment I thought the best thing to do was head it. I obviously missed but you make a quick decision at the time.

“It doesn’t mean I will shy away from chances. If the same happens next week I will have another go and hopefully it will hit the back of the net.

“We came to Middlesbrough and we didn’t sit back, we tried to win the game as we always do and it wasn’t to be.

“They had a strong team out and Stewart Downing has been a Premier League player for so long and that’s why – because he has got quality like that.”

Middlesbrough’s reward for beating Stanley is a home draw against Oxford United.
