Screen Actors Guild Awards postponed to avoid clash with this year’s Grammys

-

This year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards has been moved once again. It was announced on Wednesday that the 27th annual ceremony has been moved to Sunday, April 4, to avoid a date clash with the Grammys. Both events were scheduled to be broadcast on Sunday, March 14.

In the US, the Sag Awards will be screened on TNT and TBS at 9pm EST on April 4 (6am GST on April 5). The event honours outstanding film and television performances.

The Grammys had switched from Sunday, January 31, to Sunday, March 14, owing to a recent surge in coronavirus cases and deaths in Los Angeles. Other awards shows, including the Oscars and Golden Globes, have also pushed their ceremonies. The Golden Globes will now take place on Sunday, February 28, which was originally the date for the 93rd Academy Awards. The Oscars will be held on Sunday, April 25.

“Throughout these challenging times, our industry and our union members have proven their creativity and resilience in discovering new methods of storytelling while adapting to new safety protocols and procedures,” the Sag Awards’ organising body, the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists said.

“We embrace that spirit as we re-imagine the Sag Awards with a one-hour special that highlights and expands on our signature I am an Actor opening and honours the outstanding performances of the past year.”

Last week, Sag-Aftra announced its frustration over the decision to postpone the Grammy Awards. “We are extremely disappointed to hear of the conflicting date,” it said. “We announced the same date for the Sag Awards last July with the intent to give the greatest possible scheduling consideration for other awards shows. We expect the same consideration from sister organisations.”

Both awards almost clashed last year, too, after the Grammys announced it would take place on the same day as the Sags, on January 26. Sag-Aftra moved its date to a week earlier after the Recording Academy’s announcement.

The Sag Awards has extended its eligibility period by two months this year, to include works broadcast between January last year and the end of next month. Nominations will be revealed on Thursday, February 4.
