Urgent surgery in Germany for Wahda player

- AMITH PASSELA

Ahmed Al Akbari was flown to Germany yesterday to undergo urgent surgery after the young Al Wahda forward suffered serious injuries in a road accident last week.

The car Al Akbari was travelling in suffered a tyre blowout on Thursday morning and was reported to have flipped several times resulting in the player suffering fractures to his ribs and back.

The 21 year old, a member of the UAE Olympic team, was treated at Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi following the incident. Family members described his condition as stable in intensive care.

“Under direction from Sheikh Theyab bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of Al Wahda, Ahmed Al Akbari and his family will travel to a hospital abroad to receive the needed medication,” the club said in a statement on Twitter on Sunday.

Given the severity of the injuries it is unlikely Al Akbari will play again this season even if the surgery is successful.

Several club players, when contacted by The National, wished their stricken teammate a speedy recovery.

Al Akbari had established himself as a first-team regular for Al Wahda this season, scoring once in six appearances for the Arabian Gulf League side.

Al Wahda suffered a shock 4-2 defeat at home to struggling Al Dhafra on Saturday.
