- CALINE MALEK

The improvements are part of the RTA’s plan to accommodate the projected growth in passengers using the airport, expected to reach 92 million by 2020

A bridge to ease traffic flow towards Deira in Dubai will open today, the Roads and Transport Authority said.

The bridge will be at the junction of Marrakech Street and Airport Road as part of the Dh404 million Airport Road Improvement Project, which is expected to be completed in December.

Another bridge, from Airport Road towards Khawaneej, has already been completed.

The project includes an overpass on Airport Road with three lanes in each direction and a direct ramp from the bridge to Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport.

The junction will also have a two-lane tunnel to serve traffic heading left from Airport Road towards Marrakech Street. Waiting times are expected to drop from seven minutes to less than one.

From today, traffic at the junction will pass through the Rashidiya corner towards Deira on the new flyover.

Motorists heading to Umm Rumool can take the right lanes.

The authority will close traffic from Terminal 1 towards Deira to complete the remaining work on the new bridge at the Casablanca junction. It will provide an alternative route through Street 51.

The improvements are part of authority’s plan to accommodate the projected growth in passengers using the airport, which is expected to reach 92 million by 2020.

The project will also increase the capacity of Airport Road by 5,000 vehicles an hour, improving traffic safety and reducing the travel time on the road from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Casablanca Street from 30 minutes to five.
