abu dhabi — Elite athletes have promised full-on action during the Daman World Triathlon Abu Dhabi 2019 this weekend at Yas Marina Circuit.

Mario Mola, world champion for three consecutive years since 2016, said the season-opener of the ITU’s Global World Triathlon Series makes Abu Dhabi always a special one.

“This is the first race of the year. I’m hoping to have a solid swim, ride and run. With every season we try to be consistent and this first race is always important, winning here is also very special for me,” Mola said during a press conference.

The triathlete is looking forward to grab all available Olympics qualification points on offer.

“With every race counting towards our total points for the Tokyo Olympics, we must aim for strong finishes to gain maximum points. I’m ready to do that here.”

Meanwhile, world champion Vicky Holland is also fully focused on 2020 Olympics — her next big aim. “I have been to two Olympics and won a medal. We have such a strong team in Great Britain and getting a place is hard,” said Vicky, who is the first female triathlete to win an Olympic medal for Great Britain – a bronze in 2016.

The event will see the strongest elite field ever in Abu Dhabi with 112 athletes, including nine of the world’s top 10 women and all top 10 men.
