sharjah — The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) has started the operation of two power production plants — Star 1 and Star 2 — located in Al Hamriya area to supply electricity to the construction projects in Sharjah corniche and waterfronts. The construction is part of its ongoing efforts to implement new and advanced projects and meet the needs of all community groups and investors.

Dr Rashid Al Leem, chairman of Sewa, told Khaleej Times that the design, engineering, installation and testing of the Star-1 and Star-2 132/33/11KV systems have been approved in accordance with the procedures followed by Sewa.

He added that the modifications and improvement works have also been conducted on the 132KV substation located at Al Hamriyah power plant.

“The Star1 and Star 2 projects, which are 57.6km long with an operational capacity of 700MW were completed at the cost of Dh250 million. It is expected to supply power to 60,000 people after the completion of the project. This capacity is sufficient to provide power to the city’s urban, environmental complexes and residential communities in the waterfront. “The demand for power in Sharjah is increasing by 3 per cent annually and Sewa is growing to adapt to the needs,” he added.

Dr Al Leem said Sewa will manage the operation of the two plants. “These plants are considered to be the leading models of successful partnership between the public and private sectors. It is also one of the major development projects in Sharjah and the UAE.

He pointed out that Sewa is giving attention to providing services for new development projects as part of its strategic plan to keep pace with the steady growth.
