The Hazara University of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ( KP) in a bizarre move has introduced a dress code for the students, staff and faculty of the university claiming it would encourage the students to focus more on studies and less on clothes.

The measure would also end any discrimination among students on the basis of their financial background, says the university in its defence.

According to a notification issued by the University administration, the girl students have been advised not towear tight jeans, T- shirts. They are also expected not to put on heavy make- up while at the campus. The dress code also includes restrictions on carrying expensive handbags or wearing jewellery.

Subject to debate

The Hazara University Registrar issued the notification on January 6 after ameeting of the university’s annual academic staff council. The rules will come into effect today, when the university reopens for students, the notification further says.

After it was issued, the notification has been a subject of debate on national as well as social media and people are trying to figure out what goals exactly the university administration desired to achieve by setting dress code for students.

Sharifullah Wazir hailing from the Wazir tribe of the KP in a tweet criticised the decision saying he failed to understand why the PTI government was radicalising academic institutions.

He has reminded the KP government as well as the university that it [ radicalisation of institutions] was not the first time but is systematically manufactured.

Hamadur Rehman another social media user has regretted that the elderly professors of the university are not concerned about the absence of a culture of research at the universities but theirmain worry is what kind of clothes boys and girls are wearing.
